The service

Language In Use provides articles, a multilingual dictionary, verb conjugations, practice tools and community features for language learners. We offer the service as it is and may add, change or remove features over time.

Your account

• You must be at least 13 years old to create an account.
• Give accurate registration details and keep them up to date.
• You are responsible for keeping your password secret and for activity on your account.
• Tell us promptly at hello@languageinuse.com if you think your account has been compromised.

Acceptable use

When using Language In Use, you agree not to:

• Post unlawful, hateful, harassing, deceptive or sexually explicit content.
• Infringe anyone else's copyright, trade marks or other rights.
• Upload malware, or attempt to break, overload or gain unauthorised access to the service.
• Scrape or bulk-download content except as permitted by our robots.txt.
• Impersonate another person, or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone.
• Interfere with advertising on the site, or click ads artificially.

We may suspend or close accounts that breach these terms, and remove content that does.

Objectionable content and abusive users

We have no tolerance for objectionable content or for abusive behaviour towards other people. Anything in the list above is unwelcome anywhere on the site, in the apps, in chat and on group walls, and posting it can cost you your account without warning.

In the mobile apps, every message, post and comment written by somebody else carries a control to report it or to block its author. Blocking works both ways: a blocked person’s messages, posts and comments stop reaching you, and yours stop reaching them. You can block someone from a chat on the website too, and you can report anything to us at hello@languageinuse.com from anywhere.

Reports reach a moderator, who reads them and — where these terms have been breached — removes the content, suspends the account, or both. We aim to deal with a report within 24 hours of receiving it.

Content you post

You keep ownership of everything you post. By posting it you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, display and distribute it as part of running the service. You confirm you have the right to post it. You can delete your content at any time; copies may persist briefly in backups.

Our content

Articles, dictionary entries, conjugation data, design and code on this site are owned by Language In Use or its licensors and are protected by copyright. You may read, link to and quote reasonable extracts with attribution. You may not republish substantial portions without written permission.

Some articles on this site are produced with the assistance of AI tools and reviewed before publication. We aim for accuracy but do not guarantee it.

Advertising

The site is funded in part by advertising. Ads are supplied by third parties and their appearance is not an endorsement by us. See our privacy policy for how advertising cookies are handled.

Paid features

Most of Language In Use is free. Where we offer paid subscriptions, the price and billing period are shown before you buy. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled, and you can cancel at any time from your account. Statutory rights to cancel and to a refund are unaffected.

Learning content is not professional advice

Language In Use is an educational resource. Translations, definitions and articles may contain errors and should not be relied on for legal, medical, financial or other professional purposes.

Availability and liability

We work to keep the service available but cannot promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we may suspend it for maintenance. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data or profits. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Ending your use

You can stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you breach these terms or if we stop offering the service.

Changes

We may update these terms. We will revise the date above and, for material changes, give notice on the site. Continuing to use Language In Use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to any mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence.
